Georgian 9ct carnelian wax seal fob necklace

£395.00

A chunky Georgian 9ct gold and carved carnelian wax seal fob necklace in the Neoclassical style featuring the figure of a romanesque lady. Dating back centuries, wax seals were essential in authenticating documents and letters, ensuring privacy and integrity. By the 19th century, they symbolised status and refinement, often bearing unique personal motifs.

This particular fob seal features a romanesque lady with flowing robes, typical of the Neoclassical style. Neoclassicism was an artistic and cultural movement that emerged in the mid-18th century, reaching its height in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It was characterised by a renewed interest in the classical art, architecture, and ideas of ancient Greece and Rome. Inspired by archaeological discoveries like those at Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason and order, Neoclassicism embraced ideals of simplicity, symmetry, and clarity, favoring clean lines and balanced proportions.

This is supplied on a 14ct gold filled 45cm chain.

Good antique condition with surface wear commensurate with age. Please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.
